How to Properly Brush & Floss

Importance of Proper Brushing and Flossing

While professional dental cleanings are essential, daily brushing and flossing at home are key to maintaining oral health and preventing serious dental issues.

Have you ever questioned whether you should floss before brushing?
Most of us were taught as kids to brush first and floss afterward—which may be why many people skip flossing altogether. Once your mouth feels clean after brushing, flossing can seem like an optional extra rather than a necessary step.

However, recent research suggests the opposite approach may be more effective. Flossing before brushing helps dislodge bacteria and debris, making it easier for your toothbrush to clear away plaque. In fact, the study showed that individuals who flossed before brushing had noticeably less plaque compared to those who brushed first.

Why Brushing and Flossing Matter:

  • Prevent Tooth Decay: Removes plaque that can erode enamel and cause cavities.

  • Prevent Gum Disease: Stops plaque buildup that leads to gum inflammation and periodontal disease.

  • Prevent Bad Breath (Halitosis): Clears away trapped food particles that cause odor.

  • Prevent Stains: Helps reduce staining from foods, drinks, and smoking by regularly cleaning teeth.

Proper Brushing Technique:

  • Brush at least twice daily, especially in the morning and before bed.

  • Use a soft-bristled, small-headed toothbrush, replaced every 3 months.

  • Electric toothbrushes with rotating heads are ADA-recommended and effective.

  • Brush at a 45° angle to the gums using gentle, circular motions.

  • Clean all surfaces: outer, inner, chewing surfaces, and the tongue.

Proper Flossing Technique:

  • Floss daily to clean between teeth where brushes can't reach.

  • Use about 18 inches of floss, wrapping around middle fingers with 2–3 inches between.

  • Gently slide between teeth and curve in a U-shape around each tooth.

  • Move the floss up and down carefully beneath the gumline.

  • Avoid snapping floss to prevent gum injury.
