Fluoride is the most effective mineral for preventing tooth decay. It occurs naturally in most foods and water and has been proven beneficial for over 50 years.
Topical fluoride: Applied directly to teeth (via toothpaste, rinses, or professional treatments), it strengthens enamel and increases resistance to decay.
Systemic fluoride: Ingested through food, water, or supplements, it strengthens both developing and erupted teeth.
Fluoride supplements (drops or tablets) may be prescribed for children when natural intake is insufficient. However, excessive fluoride during tooth development can cause fluorosis (white spots on teeth).
Deep grooves in teeth
Exposed roots or sensitivity
Poor oral hygiene
High sugar intake
Low fluoride exposure
Reduced saliva flow
Recent dental decay
Important note: Fluoride is a helpful tool, but not a standalone solution. Proper brushing, flossing, diet, and regular dental visits are essential for cavity prevention.
